Deck the halls….Santa Claus is coming to town…
The most wonderful time of the year.. Right??
But life is messy…what if you’re just not feeling that Christmas glow?
Christmas is my favourite time of the year; I love the dark nights, cosy evenings, exchanging gifts and decorating the house.
But this year, I’m struggling. I have myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E) also know as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This is my first year tackling Christmas since my diagnosis and it’s made me see things from a different view. I never understood people who didn’t like Christmas, called them a Scrooge and quickly moved on with my merriment.
But this year I get it, I WANT to feel the joy and celebration but my body just isn’t letting me. I’m getting stressed, my body hurts, so many to-do lists and so little time. I’ve gotten to thinking about all those people for whom Christmas may not be the most wonderful time of the year.
What about the lonely, the sick, the people with dysfunctional families, those struggling to make ends meet financially….how does Christmas feel for them?
Why do we attach all this pressure to just one day? What is it all for? As a Christian of course I know Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, but that so easily gets lost amongst the shiny wrapping paper and popping corks.
I think that my body not playing ball with my grand plans this year could be a good thing. I’m having to pause. Take a breath. Relax.
I’ve realised the world won’t end if my to-do list remains undone. I am trying to actually be in the moment, enjoying my family and friends. Embracing the joy and sense of celebration that is so tangible at this time of year rather than resenting what I can’t do.
So maybe this Christmas I’ll think more about how I can spread a little joy to others instead of dashing around buying last minute presents. I’ve been trying to smile a little more, let cars out in front of me even when I’m in a rush, catch up with friends whom I’ve neglected in the busyness of it all.
So this year, if you’re hurting, if you’re feeling blue or just not ‘in the spirit’, I feel you! But maybe you can try to focus on the good you see around you. And if you can’t see good around you, maybe you can BE the good.
